As a child I always wondered how things worked. My parents lacked a technical background, and the schools I attended also lacked in teaching engineering concepts. My entire childhood I was always told to work hard so that I could be a successful engineer one day, but I never truly knew what that meant. I always wished as a middle school/ high school student that I could see what engineering was. Being able to contribute back to younger students and engage them in engineering is now very rewarding.

Understanding the world is the first step to seeing how one can help improve it. That’s why I want to show students how to be inquisitive and learn about the things around them. It is definitely difficult to see yourself as someone who helps solve the world’s problems one day, so one of my goals is to encourage students to at least consider the possibility.

As a kid I was always fascinated by people on TV building things and doing science experiments. But whenever I was curious or tried to make anything myself, I would end up getting in trouble. Thus, I just stuck to watching 8 hours (yikes) of TV a day. In college I started learning about science and engineering, and I haven’t been bored since! Now I hope to share the fun of hands-on learning with as many students as possible.

I think understanding how things work is super cool, and I believe creativity always starts with a good understanding of the fundamentals. Through this program, I’d like to inspire students to discover how stuff around us works through hands-on experiences. I hope to share the fun of learning and to encourage them to actively question about and explore the world around them.
